At this time of year, as the sap of the trees and flowers returns to their root systems, we too are preparing to turn inward. In virtually every ancient medicine system, this season of harvest was seen as the time of the year to pull inward and gather together on all levels; a time to plan for the approaching darkness and stillness of winter.

In TCM (traditional Chinese medicine), autumn is associated with wind and dryness. It’s also the season associated with the lungs and large intestine, which are responsible for releasing carbon dioxide and food wastes, respectively. It follows that the energy of both these organs is ‘letting go’. Elimination problems like chronic constipation can be exacerbated at this time of year. Emotionally, it’s the time of year to look at things we are hanging onto that are no longer serving us, and to let them go for good.

Similarly in Ayurveda, vata (the wind principle) characterises the autumn months. Dry conditions related to the lungs are common now. Uns...

Transforming Your Health - 2019

Best Health Tips # 3

RESET YOUR DIET

Of course we all have different metabolism, epigentetics and lifestyles which means there are different food and nutrient requirements to suit. Resetting your diet really needs a tailored plan. A tailored plan that suits your requirements. However there is a broad based commonality that we can talk about when it comes to food.

Its our relationship to food. Foods that have a negative impact on you physically, mentally and emotionally. Yes, it can be so confusing there is a plethora of information in regards to nutrition and so much mis information out there.  You just have to read the news to know currently, in terms of diet and food - we have terms such as Paleo, Vegan, Lectin & Leptin free, Salicylate, Fructose intolerant, Gluten Intolerant, Sugar free, Gluten free, Raw diets and the list goes on.

Tip # 2

Embracing the time of day to exercise

Did you know the time of day your exercise impacts your health?

Studies confirm Individuals who exercise in the morning spend longer in REM Deep sleep than other individuals exercising at different times of day.    It all seems to do with resetting the hormone cortisol – setting it at the right time with the right amount.  The morning exerciser seems to have an advantage point – Most I say because it requires hormone testing to see where your cortisol is at.  If your cortisol is low in the morning, but higher toward the end of the day – it suggests there may be sleep issues as the hormone plays with your sleep patterns.  If its high in the morning and lower at night, you'll exercise great and sleep best at night.

Morning exercisers seem to experience e a wide range of benefits ranging from 25% reduction in blood pressure, deactivation of flight/fight schedule meaning a calmer person, a calmer digestion absorbing ma...

13 Signs You Have a Hormonal Imbalance

And that’s not just a lame excuse, no matter what your partner says. Hormones, do in fact, play a very important role in women’s health and well being. When hormone levels fluctuate, this can impact on your mood, sexual desire, fertility and ovulation, even socialising.

What causes a hormonal imbalance?

Hormone problems are common, so you if you feel that you are experiencing a hormonal imbalance, then you are not alone. There are certain causes which can throw off your body’s natural chemistry. Common culprits are menopause, pregnancy, menstrual cycle, the contraceptive pill, and lifestyle factors such as inconsistent sleep patterns, exposure to toxins 9personal and environmental), stress, a poor diet and lack of exercise. Other causes can be thyroid issues or diabetes.

SPRING Wellness Week - Spring Has Sprung....

In preparing for Spring it is important to begin with an understanding of how each season affects every other. Our sense of balance, as we go into the Spring, is intricately connected to whether or not we took the time to rest in the winter (restore, be still, and go inward).
Spring is associated with new growth and expansion--the time when the seeds begin to sprout and push upward to the sun with force. Likewise, there may be escalated agitation in individuals as the springtime inspires the urge to move forward and grow after the encapsulation of winter.

New growth is dependent upon the rejuvenation of our deeper sources that occurred in the winter. Spring is associated with the liver and with the emotion anger. The liver energy, when balanced, modulates our emotional energy. The autumn is the time of letting go. If a person was not able to let go of outmoded beliefs or emotions in the Autumn - it can show up in the Spring as congestion.

Telomeres and Aging

We take our youth for granted much of the time we are experiencing it until things deteriorate and we experience Fat deposits, aches and pains, fatigue and a lack of vitality that are all typical symptoms of ageing, We all know that correct diet, exercise and stress management can reduce the signs of aging.

But did you know about telomeres and the enzyme telomerase which were genetic material discovered in the 90's that scientists have found its the lenghth of telomeres that affect our aging process?

Telomere length offers unique information about an individual’s cells.
Telomere length reveals how your cells are ageing. Telomeres by definition are sections of genetic material found at the end of each chromosome whose primary function is to stop chromosomal “fraying” when a cell replicates. The best visual you can align with this definition is a plastic tip similar to that on the end of shoelaces. These protect the lace from fraying prematurely. A telomeres job is to sa...

Seasonal Affective Disorder SAD.

It’s Winter. Whilst you may be feeling cooler, you dread winter due to feeling an association to a change in seasons such as Winter Depression.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is associated with the feeling of winter depression and feeling normal or very happy in Summer. Individuals who genuinely go through SAD feel depressed, generally slow down, over sleep, over eat and crave carbohydrates in winter. In the summer, these same individuals feel elated, active and energetic.

There are many variables that may predispose an individual to SAD but the most researched and evident reason is lack of exposure to full spectrum natural light.

Many mammals exhibit seasonal variation in activity levels, sleep patterns and appetite and are extremely sensitive to changes in the day length. The key hormonal change may be a reduced secretion of melatonin by the pineal gland and an increased secretion of cortisol by the adrenal glands.

Melatonin supplementation during the n...
